SIGHTS in pieria
In Pieria, there are many sites of archeological interest, such as Dion, Pydna, Palaios Panteleimonas, Leivithra Leptokaryas, Platamonas and many more.
Olympus is the tallest mountain in Greece. It’s famous around the world because on it’s top named Mitikas (2918 m), the ancient Greeks had placed the home of the Twelve “Olympian” Gods. Since 1938, Olympus is the first region of Greece declared a National Park.
Ancient Dion is found in the shadow of mount Olympus next to the homonymous village of the state of Pieria and it is approximately 5 km from the sea. It covers an area of 1500 acres. The ancient site of Dion was a city surrounded by areas of worship and its settlements were known from the classical era up to early Christian times. Dion was not only a place of worship but also developed into a large significant city. Although it’s rise and glory through the ages it began to decline and unfortunately lost its glory and almost erased of the map.
The first official excavations of ancient Dion took place exactly after the liberation of Macedonia from the Turks, but essentially professor Dimitris Pandermallis is the one whom unearthed the ruins and grandeur of this magnificent city.
The Castle of Platamonas is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Greece. It is situated in the southeast of Mount Olympus, on the top of a hill above the sea, a location from which the main road connecting Macedonia to Thessaly can be controlled.
The Castle of Platamonas, which is around 10 centuries old, magnetizes the traveller with its imposing presence. Especially at night, the amazing illumination adds to its grandeur and appeal. The Castle of Platamonas is considered to be the hallmark of Pieria and one of the most significant landmarks in the area.

Ancient Pydna is situated on the west coast of Thermaikos, between Makrigialos and Kitros. The city emerged as an important commercial center.
Its first name was Kydna and it is not known when it was founded. After the Persian Wars it became part of the state of Macedonia, under King Alexander I, until its apostasy in 410 BC.
Palaios Panteleimonas is a traditional, restored settlement. At an altitude of 500 meters in the east slopes of Mount Olympus, with a view of the sea and close to the beach, it is known for its Macedonian architecture. By taking a walk in the alleys, from the old settlement until the square of Saint Panteleimonas with the perennial plane trees, you can travel back in time and get charmed by the view.
